Košice

The city of Kosice lies in the valley of Hornad and encircled by the spurs of the Chierna mountains and Volovske hills. The city of Kosice with 236 thousand inhabitants is an industrial center of the eastern part of Slovakia. It is the second largest and most significant city after the capital Bratislava. The city has great economical importance. There is a largest steel factory in Slovakia. The city has the larges historical core in the entire Slovakia. The reconstruction of the Old Part of the city began in 1992 and started to changed the appearance of the entire city. The access of cars and trams is prohibited to the Main, Mlynska, and Alzbetina Streets, which together form a pedestrian zone. The dominant of th city is the Saint Elisabeth´s Cathedrale, which is the eastern gothic cathedrale in Europe. There is the largest ZOO in Middle Europe situated in Košice. The botanical garden in Košice is the largest in Slovakia and presents the cacti collection which was the biggest in former Czechoslovakia.
